Ballads of Remembrance by Robert Hayden :: Robert Hayden
In 1962 Robert Hayden wrote a collection of poems entitled Ballads of Remembrance. This collection is comprised of 36 poems that are separated into 4 groups. Each group refers to a different focus of remembrance; for example, one group focuses on the struggle of African Americans in terms of finding identity and a sense of transcendence. "Those Winter Sundays" is part of the group of poems that focuses on remembrances of Haydenââ¬â¢s childhood, past, and personal struggles. Hayden had an extremely harsh and conflicted childhood. His parents were divorced at a young age, and his mother left him with a foster family in Detroit whose name, Hayden, he ended up adopting. He grew up in a very poor neighborhood called Paradise Valley, which was not a "paradise" at all. He had separate issues with his foster mother and father, who were both stern people. His father encouraged Robert to gain an education in order to lift himself out of poverty. Yet, at the same time, his father found it difficult to communicate with his foster son, who always had his head in a book or was constantly studying. The lack of verbal communication between his father and himself can be seen in his poem "Those Winter Sundays." The overall impression of the poem is that love can be communicated in other ways than through words; it can be communicated through everyday, mundane actions. For example, in the poem, the father awakens on "Sundays too" to warm the house with a fire and polish his sons shoes. There is a sense of coldness in the beginning of the poem through the lines: Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold. Haydenââ¬â¢s father is not only bringing physical warmth to him by making the fire; he is also bringing spiritual warmth to him. By the end of the poem, the reader feels an overall sense of warmth as the poet comes to a better understanding of his fatherââ¬â¢s unappreciated actions. In terms of Romanticism, the idea of transcendence seems to be present in the poem in regard to the fact that the father-son relationship is beyond words. The relationship exists, but it is difficult to articulate. Also the idea that Hayden is rising to a deeper understanding of his relationship with his father is present. There are lines in the poem that state: When the rooms were warm, heââ¬â¢d call, And slowly I would rise and dress.

Food Waste in America Essay
40% of the food America produces is wasted.1 Have you ever thought of how much food you waste a day? The average American wastes about 250 pounds of food every year.2 Thatââ¬â¢s about $600 dollars worth of food.3 Imagine what you could do with $600.00. No one notices what is in the back of their fridge or what goes into their trash can. Before you say that you donââ¬â¢t do that, think back to a moment when you had the chance to take the restaurant food home, but you declined it because you were too full. Now, imagine thousands of people doing that every day. Tons and tons of food is wasted. Over 33 million tons of food is wasted every year in America. 4 That is enough to fill a 90,000 seat football stadium to the brim with food over 120 times.5 We waste so much food that our food waste could power Switzerland for an entire year. Americans should lower the amount of food they waste by taking home extra foodà from restaurants and buying appropriate amounts of food at the store . 1 http://www.culinate.com/articles/features/wasted_food http://www.businessinsider.com/faoà wastedà foodà 2011à 5 3 http://www.wisegeek.com/howà muchà foodà doesà theà averageà americanà waste.htm 4 http://www.epa.gov/osw/conserve/materials/organics/food/fdà basic.htm 5 http://www.naturalnews.com/033885_food_waste_America.html 2 Everybody has been to a restaurant before and not finished their food. Well, did you ever think about bringing it home to finish later? Most people donââ¬â¢t think like that, since they are full at the moment, and believe they wonââ¬â¢t eat it later. Give it a try and bring it home to eat it for a quick dinner later. Well, you might say ,ââ¬Å"Oh well, I didnââ¬â¢t like the food.â⬠There is nothing à wrong with that. If you donââ¬â¢t like the food then, you donââ¬â¢t like it. Iââ¬â¢m not going to argue with that, no one likes to eat everything in the world. All Iââ¬â¢m saying is open your eyes and notice how much food is being wasted at restaurants. Restaurants are Americaââ¬â¢s food source. We go to restaurants when we donââ¬â¢t feel like making dinner.ââ¬â¹ The average familyà goes to dinner around thirty five times a year. So, letââ¬â¢s say you waste on average five ounces. of food every time you go to dinner. Thatââ¬â¢s about ten lbs. of food wasted in one year just by going to restaurants. Now, letââ¬â¢s add your family into this. If you have a four member family that would be forty lbs. of food wasted by your family. That is equivalent to around forty plates of food being thrown out, and you could have eaten half of that atà home. The moral of the story is that if you reduce the amount of waste at restaurants, you can make a big difference in lowering Americaââ¬â¢s waste percentage. The average American family spends about $8,513 on groceries a year, and wastes about $600 of that food.6 Basically, the average American family wastes about fourteen percent of the food they buy. Families are wasting way too much food. My generation has grown up with this, so itââ¬â¢s all that we know. It is very hard to extinguish a bad habit. Have you ever heard of the saying, ââ¬Å"Your eyes are bigger than your stomach?â⬠That is actually very true. Have you ever seen people unload their food from their cart at a grocery store? I have seen people have so much food that they have to get another cart. That is just ridiculous. If you have a big family, thatââ¬â¢s fineà ¾ but if you only have two to four people in your family, then you are purchasing too much food. There are simple ways to not overspend at a grocery store. One way to not overspend at a grocery store is to make a grocery list or à have a leftover day. Have aà leftovers on Wednesday or Sunday. Not everybody does this, but no one is innocent. most people have overbought amounts of food at some point. Maybe you ate the food ,maybe you didnââ¬â¢t. It is important to think before you go along buying more food than you can handle. This goes right back to the saying, ââ¬Å"your eyes are bigger than your stomach.â⬠Taking home food from restaurants and buying appropriate amounts of food at your local grocery store is a great way to lower food waste. America has the largest waste percentage in the world. That is not anything to be proud of. Do you ever think about how much food you throw away in a month? Food waste is a big problem in America, It could be lowered by just doing a couple simple of steps and by thinking before you throw away something that could be eaten. Food is meant to be eaten not wasted.

Consumer Perception Of Consumer s Purchasing Intent Essay
Consumer perception is the impression; awareness and the consciousness customers have about a product. So to understand how modern consumers perceive products quality from multidimensional perceptive, we have to uncover and examine what role of product attributes may play on product evaluations and purchasing intent (Osman Rahman, Spring 2011). Businesses have to explore the underlying motives of consumerââ¬â¢s purchasing intent, uncover the relative significance of intrinsic and extrinsic cues as determinants of consumersââ¬â¢ purchasing intent and to understand the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic cues (Osman Rahman, Spring 2011). Advertisement, personal experience, social media, and public relations affect customersââ¬â¢ perception in so many ways. So businesses advertise with the primary objectives of reaching prospective customers and to influence their awareness, attitudes and buying behaviors (European Journal of Business and Management Vol. 3). The companies spend a lot of money, targeting, segmenting and keeping individuals interest in their product, which they succeed. Also social media has contributed towards marketing and it is one of the strongest tools or avenues, which reach out to some demographic and age groups in the economy.
